Most moving checklists are too vague, too late, or too repetitive. This one is built from the patterns we see in 10,000+ completed moves — the tasks that actually prevent last-minute crises, the sequence that actually works, and the items that actually get forgotten.
8 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Set your moving budget — include movers, truck/container, packing supplies, and 15% contingency
- Research and book your moving company or truck rental (availability goes fast in summer)
- Begin decluttering: donate, sell, or discard anything you would not carry yourself
- Notify your employer, bank, and financial institutions of your upcoming address change
- Start gathering moving supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers
6 Weeks Before
- Complete your mover research — get at least 3 binding estimates
- Book your mover and confirm the date in writing
- Create a room-by-room inventory for insurance and claims purposes
- Start packing non-essential items: off-season clothing, books, decorations
- Arrange for transfer of medical, dental, and school records if moving to a new city
4 Weeks Before
- Confirm your moving reservation and reread the contract
- Notify your utility providers of your move-out and move-in dates
- Submit change of address with USPS (can be done online)
- Contact your insurance company — homeowner/renter insurance needs a move date
- Pack a “first night” box: toiletries, phone charger, bedding, coffee maker, one change of clothes
2 Weeks Before
- Confirm all utilities at new address are scheduled to start on move-in day
- Return borrowed items; collect anything left at friends or family
- Defrost freezer (start 24 hours before pickup if movers are packing appliances)
- Label every box with contents AND destination room — not just the room
- Take photos of all electronics setups before disassembly
Moving Day
- Do a final walk-through of every room, closet, cabinet, and outdoor space
- Check under beds, in medicine cabinets, and in attic/basement
- Keep valuables, important documents, and medications with you — not on the truck
- Confirm delivery address and contact number with the lead mover
- Tip the crew at the end (see our tipping guide)
After You Arrive
- Check every item against your inventory as it is unloaded
- Document any damage immediately — photograph and note on the delivery receipt before signing
- Set up essentials first: beds, bathroom, kitchen
- Update your address on: driver’s license, voter registration, subscriptions, Amazon, and Apple/Google accounts
- File a change of address with your doctor, dentist, and specialists

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start preparing for a move?
Start at least 8 weeks before your move date for a long-distance move, or 4–6 weeks for a local move. The tasks that cause the most last-minute stress — mover booking, utility transfers, and packing non-essentials — are all manageable with a proper lead time.
What should go in a first-night box?
Essentials you will need the first 24 hours: bedding and pillows, phone/laptop charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, any medications, coffee maker, paper towels, toilet paper, and a small toolkit (screwdriver, Allen keys for reassembling furniture).
Is there anything I should not pack on the truck?
Keep valuables (jewelry, passports, irreplaceable documents), medications, and electronics containing personal data (laptops, hard drives) in your personal vehicle or carry-on. Movers are not liable for high-value items unless they are explicitly listed and insured.
