Our Research Methodology

How we gather data, score moving companies, and build the cost estimates that power our guides.

How We Build Cost Data

Our moving cost estimates are derived from three primary sources: (1) anonymized move data provided by our carrier partners, (2) publicly available FMCSA rate data, and (3) reader-submitted quotes verified against market rates. We update our cost databases quarterly and flag articles when seasonal pricing adjustments exceed 10%.

All cost ranges are presented as binding estimate ranges for full-service moves unless otherwise noted. We do not use non-binding estimate data in our cost guides because non-binding estimates do not reflect what people actually pay.

How We Review Moving Companies

Our company reviews are scored on six weighted criteria:

CriteriaWeightHow We Measure
Price Transparency25%Binding vs. non-binding, quote clarity, hidden fees rate
Customer Communication20%Response time, coordinator availability, issue escalation
On-Time Performance20%% of deliveries within stated window
Damage Rate15%Claims filed per 100 moves (FMCSA data + customer surveys)
Claims Resolution10%Average days to resolution, settlement rate
Value for Price10%Price vs. comparable carriers + customer satisfaction

We also obtain real quotes from each company using standardized move parameters (2BR home, 1,000 miles, 30-day lead time) to ensure price comparisons are based on identical conditions.

Editorial Independence

Companies cannot pay to be reviewed, improve their score, or influence their ranking. Our affiliate relationships are disclosed on every relevant page, and affiliate fees are not a factor in our scoring. A company that pays us a high affiliate commission receives the same scoring process as one that pays nothing.

If we identify a factual error in any article, we correct it publicly and note the correction at the bottom of the article. Corrections are not hidden or removed — they are part of our record.
